to be honest....

I could say I'm ill, but to be honest I went out last night with my colleagues from school and..... let's say the night became longer than it should've been hehe
At first it was only a dinner to celebrate that 5 people have passed the oposicions, but after having dinner we went to have a drink.... or two..... and then the young crew proposed to go to a disco..... and the rest you might guess.
As we met in Sabadell and I went with my car, I had to leave it there and spend the night in my english colleague's home. We arrived at 7 am more or less, and today we've woken up at 10'30 (my idea was going to the course after the break). So I just slept 3 hours and a half. But then I started to feel terrible....... sickness, tireness, headache........... you know, the typical. So I stayed at my friend's home for a couple of hours, drinking camomile and gelocatil. The thing is that I've arrived home at 1 pm and gone directly to bed til now (almost 7 pm) I'm much better I must say! I'll have my lunch-dinner and go to bed again lol
I would've liked to say goodbye to everyone, I'm sorry!! I hope you enjoy of your holidays and have a great school year when we come back. I wanted to say that I've loved the course, I've learnt a lot and also enjoy with all of you.
Kisses and hugs for everyone!

anabel

PS: Geoff, I promise I'll write about the book I've read shortly, but not today....... maybe at the weekend when my brain works properly again!

surfing on the net I bumped into this web page:

Very nice, isn't it?

Reading about education

What do you think of the books you are reading? A few initial impressions would be interesting. I've just finished Wilful Behaviour by Donna Leon if you like thrillers it's highly recommendable for a summer's read. Look at the articles in this week's Guardian Education, and see if you find any of them interesting to tell us about tomorrow.

PHRASAL VERBS

Dedicated to Maria Carme.

Here's a story with lots of phrasal verbs. If you feel like to, you can try and "translate" all of them; but, if you give it up, I'm going to bring out the translation of the text in this blog tomorrow afternoon.

One of my best friends

He is very lucky; he always lies in till late every morning. Then he stretches out and gets ready to start a new day. He spends great part of his time hanging around and soaking up the sun, and when lunch is ready, he always tucks into spaghetti, his favourite food. Now he's put on some extra weight so he's decided to cut down on pasta.
He is incredible! He's never let me down, he's always cheered me up when something got me down and, since I took up ioga some time ago because of my backache, he's always backed me up staying next to me during the salute to the sun.
We really get on well though sometimes I have to put up with his strong voice: when he wants to be heard, he always drowns out the music I try to listen to on the radio.
We've never fallen out but once: that day I was so nervous that I got at him and stormed out of the room. he followed me, he tried to iron out our problems and when I finally chilled out, he licked my cheek and barked. Let me point it out: Bobby is the best dog ever!!!

still looking good after the phrasal verb immersion!

Introducing Neus

It is a little bit little late for introducing myself, but I have been fighting for long to get the access to the blog. It seems that the cookies (I don’t know what they are) were disabled in my computer. I asked to my neighbour for help. Now, I think that the problem is solved.
As you already know I used to work in a Primary school when I decided to move to Secondary because I needed a change. I have been working in Mollet for three years. I am in the first cycle of ESO. It has been also an interesting experience and I am sure that working as a primary school teacher before has helped me a lot. I will tell you more.
Neus

Hi!!
I'm going to write very little because I really hate writing, but I promise you that I've read all your comments!!
I'm Raquel and I'm 28. I live in Torelló and I've been working as an English teacher for 3 years. I really love children and teaching. I'm not married and so I don't have children. And that's all for today.
See you tomorrow!!!

MOTHER TONGUE: AN INTERESTING BOOK

Hi everybody!

I've spent part of my weekend reading "Mother tongue" by Bill Bryson. If you like languages in general, and English in particular, you'll like this book. It's about language, English and its origins, about vocabulary, pronunciation, spelling, dialects ... and many curious details about the use of English around the world. So far I've learnt that English is not always a very logical language and some times it can be very tricky if you're a foreigner ; there are lots of examples that make you smile more than once, for instance ..when a person says to you "How do you do?" he will be taken aback if you reply, with impeccable logic "how do I do what?"
I'm really enjoying it!
See you tomorrow!

See you on Monday :-)

Call my bluff

Idioms are the colour of the language and the despair of advanced learners!
1. If you leave the topic and go off the beaten path you talk about something irrelevant.
2. If you go off the beaten path, you go soemwhere for the first time.
3. If your house is in the middle of the mountains, it is off the beaten path.
Try and call my bluff!
As I mentioned at the end of the class, look at the idioms exercise in TICK, find one you like and prepare a call my bluff for Monday morning.
Have a good weekend!

Hiya dear teachers!
I'm Carolina from Santa Eulàlia de Ronçana and I work in a school in Bigues i Riells "El Turó". These two small villages are nearby Granollers and they used to be villages where people from Barcelona had their 2nd home. This has changed quite a lot and population has increased steeply!

After reading some of the posts I feel better... The reason why is because I didn't see myself as a teacher some years ago and a couple of us have commented exactly the same, then I'm not the ugly duckling of our "guild".

Nowadays I feel very happy for having previous experiences on other fields and other ways of teaching.

Good night!! See U all tomorrow!!! Dinner is on the table!!!

Introducing Núria

Here Núria from Girona. I’m 27 and I love English! In the third year of the English Teaching Degree I was given an Erasmus grant to do the practical in Sweden and it was a great experience. Anyway, after that I decided not to work as a teacher for the moment. I just wanted to learn more of living abroad and also to improve my English.
In order to save money to go to Australia -my target on that moment- , I got a job in Scotland. I stayed there for seven months, in a little village in the middle of nowhere, working as a waitress in a Hilton Hotel. Apart from learning how to survive in a place where the weather was so depressing for me, the food from the hotel canteen was uneatable and the place to live was just a tiny shared room, after that period I was really happy to be able to have a conversation with Scottish people and get to understand them.
Back in Girona, as I had not saved enough money to go to Australia I started working in a car-rental company in Girona Airport. And there, I met my boss who became my boyfriend and almost one year ago (6th of July), my husband. We got a flat in Girona and I studied for the “Competitive examinations” and I got a post in CEIP Jacint Verdaguer in Sils. I’ve been there for three years and I’ve been learning a lot but I still have a lot to learn. We are involved in an Innovation Project based on teaching Arts and Crafts in English, and also in the English Day. I could go on telling more things but I would never get to the end. And also, I could go on explaining what the English Day is, but I’m not going to do it because it’s the topic of my talk for tomorrow.
See you!

About a boy - Nick Hornby

I'm on the 14th chapter and can't stop reading!! but that's not a surprise. That's why I chose this one, I was sure it would be hilarious. In this case he tells us the story of a guy aged 36 who is childlike and a boy aged 12 who behaves like an adult. They meet by chance, due to a complex mixture of situations, and start a kind of weird friendship. I'll let u know more when I finish it.
I think 2 more people in class are reading Hornby's books, I really recommend them to u, they're easily read, funny, ironic, touchy.... try one if u haven't yet!

Three days gone!!!!

Hope you are enjoying the cooler weather. I've tried posting comments "anonymously" and there shouldn't be any problem. Anabel's talk about CLIL was very interesting. Feel free to use the blog as a way of exchanging experiences and ideas at school. You should have got well into your books by now (??????) Although you haven't read them yet, let us know about your initial impressions, so people can comment on the books. Have a look at this site to get an introduction to tomorrow's first topic.
See you tomorrow.

Introducing myself

Hi! My name is Marga and I'm from Barcelona. I started working as a teacher when I was 21 and now I'm 51. Thirty years: that's a long time. I studied English at school and I liked it. I went on studing it in EOI while I studied "Magisteri". Then I became a teacher and I started working with six and seven years old children and I forgot everything about English. But in 1994, the Education Department required me to take part in an examination ("oposicions") tribunal. This was the way I start again with English: I could do the fith level in the EOI (when I did the first four levels, fith level didn't exist), and I have been three times in England with a grant of the Education Department. I work in CEIP Pegaso (I've been working there for 25 years) and we have been involved in three English Language innovation projects. But after all this time I feel that my English is not so good as it must be. That's the reason to join this course. See you tomorrow.

something about me

I've always liked English, even when I wasn't conciuous about it. My parents used to listen to The beatles and I just started singing the songs, of course without knowing what I was saying. Then I wanted to know what other singers/groups said in their songs, so I enroled an English school to learn the language properly. Funny eh? music has been the starting point in my career!
After some time, I also got very interested in the cultural aspect; bristish 60's style, britpop, the country, fashion, etc., and nowadays, as my colleagues say, I look like British more than Spanish. in fact, when I go to the UK they don't believe I'm Spanish! maybe because I'm as tanned as an skimo lol
Being a teacher was another story....... I DID NOT like children when I was a teenager, I'm not joking. But things change, and now I'm very happy about my job and everything I do related to it. I've taught at a private English school, and also in Formacio d'Adults, although I passed my oposicions for Primary.
And more or less that's all. Tomorrow I'll talk about more "professional aspects". I hope I can give you some practical ideas to put into practice!
c u 2morrow!

Introducing Silvia

Hi everybody,

I’m Sílvia from Sant Quirze de Besora. First of all I’ve to apologize, Geoff. I received your invitation twice, the first one yesterday, but my mailer has a filter and analyzed your messages as spam and they were send to the junk e-mail folder.
As I said I live in Sant Quirze but I’m not going to explain anything about it because this is the topic of my talk on Thursday.
I’ve been working as a teacher for 15 years. This is my first school year at Montesquiu, a rural school with 41 pupils, 4 teachers and 4 specialist teachers shared with 3 other rural schools; we fit altogether in one photo. And this is my first year being a primary teacher because the past 6 years I’ve been teaching PE in my town school. Even so, I also have been teaching English at first levels.
On my "freetime" I help my husband working at the restaurant and there I can be a waitress, a chef assistant, a cleaning woman, an administrator, ... We've got a son, Xavier and a daughter, Núria. He's 16 and she's 11.
I like reading, surfing the net and anything related to computers. And sometimes (such now) I can be a pain in the neck.
See you tomorrow,

Sílvia :-)

COLLOCATIONS

Hello everybody!

How do you feel about collocations? I've just had lunch (a rice salad with a pair of cloves of garlic, stick of celery chops and a pinch of salt) and now I'm going to clean my house: I don't want to see a single speck of dust on the shelves! Later, taking advantage of this spell of dry weather (Gosh! how I miss the patches of fog from Vic!), I'm going out and take a breathe of fresh air.I only hope that any clap of thunder or any flash of lightning is going to disturb my walk. Then I'm going to reward myself with a bar of chocolate (black chocolate is absolutely delicious!) and have a bit of fun going out to dinner with some friends; I'm sure we'll suffer more than one fit of laughter!
And that's all! Do you think I deserve a round of applause?
See you tomorrow!

The thing I like most in a student is the sincerity.
